At Stearns Design Build, we recently had the privilege of working with a lovely couple in the Shirewood Neighborhood in Bryan, Texas. They were thrilled to transform their home to be more accessible for aging in place while bringing a fresh, modern touch to their space.
With some health challenges in mind, they were looking to make their home wheelchair-friendly for the future and ensure comfort and ease of use throughout. The result? A beautifully updated home that blends modern design with practical functionality, leaving our clients delighted with the outcome.
Accessible and Modern Primary Bathroom
The primary bathroom received a complete transformation to meet accessibility needs. We replaced the existing bathtub and shower with a sleek, curbless walk-in shower.
To add functionality and style, we installed a tiled niche that matches the shower floor, surrounded by elegant glazed ceramic wall tiles. We incorporated a comfortable shower bench, hand slider shower, and strategically placed grab bars for ease and safety.
Understanding the future need for wheelchair access, we custom-built a vanity that provides the necessary clearance, making it both practical and attractive. We replaced the sinks, faucets, mirrors, and lights to match the new modern aesthetic. Additional updates included widening the closet door, installing new flooring, and replacing the toilet, ensuring the space is as user-friendly as it is visually appealing.
Guest Bathroom Renovation
In the guest bathroom, the goal was to bring continuity between the two spaces while enhancing functionality. We removed the existing bathtub and shower fixtures and added a new bathtub and fixtures that tie in with the design from the primary bathroom. A new tile was installed to match, creating a cohesive look.
We also upgraded the vanity by replacing the cabinet drawer fronts, doors, and hardware. A new sink, countertop, updated lighting, and mirror bring a fresh look to the space. Recessed lighting was installed in the shower for a touch of elegance, and we completed the remodel with new flooring, a shower rod, and a stylish curtain.
Kitchen Remodel with Custom Features

The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, and our clients wanted it to be both functional and beautiful. We gave the kitchen a sleek, modern facelift by replacing all cabinet fronts and hardware, installing a custom-made island with a convenient trash can pullout, and adding a new sink and faucet. The existing water filter system and a new garbage disposal were reinstalled for added functionality.
One standout feature of this kitchen renovation is the stunning black quartz countertops. Quartz is a top-quality material known for its durability, low maintenance, and modern appeal, making it an excellent choice for any kitchen remodel. The quartz countertops created a clean, polished look paired with the updated backsplash. We also installed new appliances, including a refrigerator and microwave, to match the kitchen’s fresh design.
Recessed lighting and a new light fixture over the island were installed throughout the kitchen to further enhance the space. Fresh paint and new flooring completed the transformation, creating a kitchen that is as functional as it is stylish. Stylish Living Room and Dining Area
The living and dining rooms received thoughtful updates to enhance their modern appeal. In the living room, we replaced the tile on the fireplace and hearth, repainted the mantle, walls, and trim, and added new flooring and paint throughout the space.
In the dining room, along with fresh paint and flooring, we installed a stunning new light fixture to elevate the room’s aesthetic. During our photo shoot, the clients’ curious cat, Henry, decided to make an appearance, adding a playful touch to the final shots of this beautiful space!
Laundry Room and Entryway
In the laundry room, we installed new flooring and recased the existing doorway for improved durability. The room received a fresh coat of paint, making it brighter and more welcoming.

The entryway was also updated with a stylish new light fixture, setting the tone for the modernized home as soon as you walk through the door.
Garage and Exterior Improvements
To ensure smooth transitions from the outdoors, we installed a concrete ramp leading into the house, making it easily accessible for future wheelchair use. We also addressed a drainage issue by removing soil and replacing sod to improve driveway drainage. The back patio received upgraded French doors that were widened and replaced, providing both accessibility and a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. Our goal at Stearns is to ensure a seamless transition between nature and residential design. Our homes are where we spend most of our time and a sanctuary where we involuntarily seek refuge and restoration.
Thoughtful Aging-in-Place Updates Throughout the Home
We made key changes throughout the home to support aging in place, including widening doorways for wheelchair accessibility, installing new flooring and fresh paint, and replacing all doorknobs with easy-to-use lever handles. These updates ensure that the home is both beautiful and practical for years to come.
