About Stearns Design-Build

Hugh Stearns worked his way through College doing carpentry. Though his degree was in psychology, he developed a love of design, craftsmanship and building science. Upon graduating from Texas A&M in 1993 he started Stearns Design Build, the Brazos Valley’s first green building company.

The company designs and builds custom homes and remodeling projects.

Using his background in psychology, Stearns developed the Transitions theory of design. This approach, unlike most in green building, focuses the attention of design on the relationship of occupants of a building, rather than on the building itself, to the surrounding environments. Stearns believes that when connected to their environments, people are more likely to live in balance to those environments. Through this approach, he seeks to create visual and physical transition into the community and natural surroundings.

While this approach runs counter to modern building science, it does not discard the vast scope of new knowledge in energy-efficient construction. It seeks to create designs that maximize efficiency without isolating people. Through research and study Stearns Design Build stays on top of the latest building trends working them into coherent projects that maximize quality of life while minimizing environmental impacts and utility costs.

In 2009 Stearns Design Build built the first net metered solar home. Net metering allows a solar array to sell electricity back to the power company, eliminating the need for batteries.

Innovation does not stop at design and building science. Stearns Design Build also strives to continuously perfect the client experience. They are proud of the customer service awards they have won and seek new insights by providing third-party project surveys. You can review customer response from the surveys at Guild Quality.
